Facebook Ad Platform Basics - What are Campaigns, Ad Sets, and Ads?

Let’s be honest, Facebook Ads can be intimidating. Getting started is the hardest part.

There is learning new terminology, figuring out your target audience, and creating attention-grabbing ads… it can all feel a bit overwhelming, knowing your department's budget is on the line.

So how does it work?

Once in the Ad Manager there are three main tabs; Campaigns, Ad sets, and Ads. These serve as the core of Facebook Ads.

A campaign is the foundation of your ads. We like to think of it as a folder that stores all the important information for a particular group of ads and ad sets.

The campaign level is where you:

  • Pick a name for your campaign

  • Select what type of ad you’d like to run

  • Set your campaign objective (i.e. increase traffic, grow  sales, promote your app, generate leads etc)

  • Decide on a daily budget

  • Select a bid strategy

  • And decide on what days and times your ads will run

Ad sets contain your target audience. This section breaks down who your ads are being shown to. It is important to have an understanding of who you are targeting. If you sell a product and have a list of customers, Facebook can use that information to create your target audience. One campaign can include several ad sets. Using several ad sets is a way to test how well your ad performs in front of different audiences.

The ad set section also includes:

  • Placements

  • Optimization and Delivery

The Ads tab is where the content for your ads live. All your photos, videos, and graphics are shown here. There are several different types of ads you can create and you can also see a mockup before they are uploaded.

Now that you have a basic understanding of Facebook Ads Manager and the different tabs, let's dive into one of the most important pieces to consider when setting up your ads.

Who is going to see my ads?

You may already have a basic understanding of who your target audience is when starting out with Facebook Ads. As you build your ad, here is a list of main categories you should be considering when coming up with your target audience.

  • Demographics

  • Location

  • Interests

  • Interactions with your business

When you put in this information, you can see your audience size will start to change. This data is important because you want your audience to be specific to your niche. They are going to be the ones to click on the ad and buy your service or product.

5 Steps To A Successful Fundraising Strategy

Whether it's gift giving season or not, having a fundraising strategy in place can make all the difference in your fundraising efforts.

Taking the time to answer these important questions will ensure you're reaching your target audience and making the impact you desire.

  1. Mission: What is the ideal outcome for this fundraising campaign?

Think about the impact you want to make with your fundraiser. Give clear reasons why people should donate to your organization.

  2. Goals: What is it that you want to achieve with this campaign?

Think about your organization's overall objective and how running a Facebook campaign supports those objectives. Some common goals Facebook gives are building awareness, raising money, communicating with core audiences, changing behavior, and motivating supporters.

  3. Target Audience: Who are you trying to reach?

Consider the types of people who are interested in helping your campaign’s cause or would benefit from being involved in the organization. Factors to keep in mind are your supporters’ interests, behaviors, networks, and lifestyles. Facebook has a tool you can utilize called the Audience Insights tool. This will show you the potential audience that fits within the criteria you have chosen.

  4. Content: What story are you going to convey and what visuals are you going to use to convey your story?

Create a series of posts that reflect your mission and goals. Sharing photos, graphics with text overlay, and vertical videos are a few ways to grab potential supporters attention while scrolling through their feed.

    • Call-to action: Be clear and concise about how supporters can help your cause.

    • Powerful imagery: Use images that evoke emotion to motivate the audience.

    • Collaboration: Share your campaign with media sources and influencers to increase the exposure.

    • Compelling copy: Captivate supporters by communicating where funds are going and how they will be used.

  5. Measurement: How will you track your progress and success?

Success will vary depending on the goals of the campaign. In relation to the campaign’s goals, reach, engagement, and conversion are all important metrics to consider.

Social Media Tips for Non Profit Organizations

Social media is one of the greatest tools for nonprofit organizations. It is an easy way to gain exposure, spread awareness, provide information, and fundraise with supporters.

We want your organization’s mission to be successful and these tips will be just the list you need!

  • Commit to 1-3 Social Media Platforms

Just because we are in the age of social media, does not mean your organization needs to have 8 different accounts to run. Focus on the platforms relevant to your cause and devote time and resources to those few. Facebook is really awesome for nonprofits. Instagram, Twitter, Pinterest, YouTube and LinkedIn are also great to consider!

  • Create a Branded Hashtag

Having a unique hashtag will help your organization stand out. It is also a way for supporters and volunteers to be a part of the cause and use their voice for good!

  • Utilize Facebook Fundraising Tools

As mentioned above, Facebook is a great platform for nonprofits. They have tools specific for fundraising, donating, and a guide to follow to make it all that much easier!

  • Create for Mobile

Most people are viewing your content from their phone. Making sure your website is easy to use in mobile layout is just as important as desktop! In addition, vertical or square created content achieved 31% higher conversion vs. traditional horizontal (Think videos, infographics, etc.).

  • Use Real Stories to Convey Your Mission.

Empathy evokes emotion, and emotion drives conversions! Humanize your story by showing who is impacted by your mission. Posting pictures and videos is a great way to let supporters in on what your work is doing for others!

  • 2:10 Fundraising to Visuals Ratio

It is a good rule of thumb to have 2 to 3 fundraising posts for every 10 pieces of content. Your supporters want to follow your cause but not be bombarded. Add in posts about  inspiring stories, behind-the-scenes, how to volunteer, information about your cause, and organization events!

  • Be Consistent

Schedule out content all year long. Do not wait to post around Giving Tuesday or a major event. Utilize the rest of the year to also gain supporters, volunteers, and spread the objectives of your mission.

7 Steps To Optimize Your Facebook Page

There are 2.41 billion monthly active users on facebook. Let that sink in…  2.41 BILLION. This statistic alone can single-handedly be the one reason why it is a MUST to have a Facebook page for your business or organization.

Now you may have already set-up a facebook page for your company, but is it optimized to its full potential?

These 7 simple steps will help you optimize your Facebook page for success.

  1. Start off by utilizing the page templates that Facebook offers. They have a bunch of different options to choose from. We recommend choosing a template that best suits your business.

  2. Add page tabs to make it easy for viewers on your page to find the information they came looking for. You can find them located on the left side of the page. You can customize by switching up placements by order of importance and add things such as services, pin important posts, and add reviews.

  3. Add reviews and recommendations from clients and customers. A positive review may be a deciding factor for a potential customer in whether or not they want to buy a product or service from you.

  4. Customize your page details. Make it clear who you are and what your purpose is. We've provided a checklist you can use to guide your set up.

  5. Add a call to action button. Direct viewers to donate, book appointments, follow social accounts, and contact your business.

  6. Optimize your general tab. In your settings you can choose to review visitor posts before they are added to your wall, choose to wait to publish your updates until it is all complete, and set a profanity filter.

  7. Consistently update and engage! Some tips when engaging with your audience is to ask relevant questions, stream live videos when appropriate, and create different types of content such as videos, and a variety of images to switch things up (team photos, collages, graphics, products, etc.)

It’s as simple as that!  Once you get your page optimized, it’s time to start thinking about setting up a facebook ad.
